 | Swap: Berra for Mayer Monday, January 8th, 1962: Reports have surfaced that New York has agreed to send 36-year-old catcher Yogi Berra to the Houston Colt 45's in exchange for 30-year-old closer Ed Mayer. "It's a done deal," said one executive speaking on the condition of anonymity. "I'm surprised word got around so quickly. We just signed off on this an hour ago." The deal apparently is awaiting physicals before an official announcement is made by either team.
Lifetime Berra has played in 1957 games with a .284 batting average. Among his 2098 hits are 349 doubles, 54 triples and 355 home runs. He also has scored 1178 runs and driven in 1417 runs.
During his career Mayer has appeared in 89 games, saving 2. | |
